it’s been a few months since I last posted about my trip to Mexico City. and while i have already shared many fantastic experiences, i must say: the highlight of the trip, (beyond the time spent catching up with the lovely heathermarie and kids,) was meeting and spending time with her mother-on-law: the incomparable, margarita malpico. what fine times we had! vibrant, charming, stylish, with a wicked sense of humor, margara is also all-out expert on all cultural things mexican.
for over 15 years margara was with The Museo Nacional de Antropología, so with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the Americas (pre-hispanic to the present) we could have no better personal docent guide us thru the museum and various neighborhoods of DF with fascinating and entertaining historical tales.
from cuisine to ceramics, textiles to artisanal chocolate, all roads lead to margara. a champion of indigenous crafts and artisans, margara travels often to remote villages helping to preserve indigeneous crafts and regularly hosts artisans in her home/salon when they come to town. you never know who you may meet, chez margara.

I met Margara ten years ago, when I was starting my own business, she was the one who had to aprove the items that would be bought from me to be sold at the Museum.
My concept was completely different when I started, my collection was full of antique tibetan pendants and semiprecious stones.
It was Margara the one who opened my eyes to a new world. For me,a uruguayan that came to mexico several years ago, was the most precious gift I have ever received. She told me, your pieces are amazing, but why don’t you turn around an see what Mexico is offering to you?
Today, almost 10 years ago, I am still in business, my concept is 100% Mexico, and Margara is, until today, my mentor. When I need advise, when I want to know something about textiles or mexican history, I don’t look for it in the internet, I just call Margara…She is the one. She is a beautiful human being with a beautiful soul, and you described her perfectly in your post

How lovely of you to post this comment about margara
I met Margarita in 1969 and she was a young and vibrant young lady.We became very cose friends
After I left mexcico in 1974 it took me another 30 years to see her again and I was ipressed with her commitment and expertise on Mexican art.
Her home itself is a precious museum.
I loved to see th ephotos and your comments about this wonderful and funny woman that I love.
