mama africa 0

Okayafrica is teaming up with the 19th New York African Film Festival to co-present the opening night of Mama Africa (Germany, 2011) Weds April 11th at 7:15pm at the Walter Reade Theater (or buy tickets here)

An unforgettable portrait of Miriam Makeba (1932-2008), the world-famous South African artist and civil right activist, who devoted her life to promoting peace and justice and fighting racism around the planet. A figurehead of the Black African movement in exile, her music and daily practice incarnated the hopes and fears of Africa through the convulsive 20th century, so that she has come to be considered the voice and mother of the Continent.

paul newman‘s legacy: shameless exploitation in pursuit of the common good. 100% of “newman’s own” products benefit numerous charities. that’s over 300 million dollars so far.

rob machado: via jon rose’s organization waves for water, supports the “Clean Water Couriers” program (distributing portable filtration systems) to bring clean water to catastrophic stricken regions around the world.

plastic free you and me 1

i appreciate and actually prefer, my consciousness raising encouragements to be aesthetically pleasing, so, todays’ post features posters by my friend dianna cohen, artist and co-founder of the plastic pollution coalition.  for over 20 years she has been piecing together gorgeous compositions, mostly re-using plastic bags (and other re-purposed materials) – that’s one way to keep it out of the waterways.  another is by making a conscious effort to refuse plastic whenever possible. then, at the very least, we are no longer contributing to the plastic pollution cycle.  here’s my own “don’t bring none, won’t be none” pledge:

i will

1. not buy or acquire any new plastic

2. refuse disposable plastic

3. not cook with plastic nor store food in plastic. remember: if your food’s in plastic, plastic’s in you…

4. minimize all other plastic use (goodbye water bottles, lighters, zip-loc baggies and big tupperware-style storage bins!)

i am trying. really trying to ween from all plastic and to refuse disposable plastics at every opportunity. 1 day at a time.

on that note, for further encouragement of the aesthetically pleasing variety:
