i love street art. driving around la, not a day goes by when i don’t see something interesting. i grab my camera and shoot it before the light turns or -in the interest of public safety and points on my license, i drive around, pull over, then shoot. coming up in nyc in the 70’s/80’s i’ve seen my share of awesome graffiti/stencil art/murals etc -it’s still in full effect there, thriving all over the world for that matter, but something is definitely brewing in la, here and now.
there’s an overview of the history of graffiti and street art – art in the streets at the geffen contemporary @ moca thru august 8, 2011. for more la street art, on the web, (-because if you’re here, just look around, it’s absolutely everywhere,) check melroseandfairfax.

On May 11, 2011, The GRAMMY Museum will debut a new exhibit, Bob Marley, Messenger. Housed on the Museum’s second floor, the exhibit will focus on Bob Marley as a private, spiritual man, as a powerful performer who used his lyrics to give a voice to the disenfranchised and as a legend who has inspired legions of fans in the 30 years since his death. Bringing together more than 40 diverse artifacts, rare photographs and more, the exhibit features items from the private collection of the Marley family.

clare vivier, who single handedly closed the book on over-logo’d “it” bags (really, a public service,) by creating the chicest, simplest, most functional, pleasingly colorful (or not) clutch/bag/tote varieties and kathryn bentley who, in short, designs the kind of jewelry i want to wear everyday, just opened a store/studio together! and that ain’t all: beatrice valenzuela‘s awesome handmade leather sandals and slip-ons, heather levine ceramics and a rotating selection of artwork from taylor cordoba gallery. welcome to the pleasure dome. almost too much joy. everywhere inside, it’s local talent, luxe-deluxe in organic simplicity. and how about that painted rug???
to no one in particular (you know who you are,) and for no immediate occasion i can think of, i’ll just say: one of every thing, in every color, please. and thank you!

paul newman‘s legacy: shameless exploitation in pursuit of the common good. 100% of “newman’s own” products benefit numerous charities. that’s over 300 million dollars so far.
rob machado: via jon rose’s organization waves for water, supports the “Clean Water Couriers” program (distributing portable filtration systems) to bring clean water to catastrophic stricken regions around the world.

i appreciate and actually prefer, my consciousness raising encouragements to be aesthetically pleasing, so, todays’ post features posters by my friend dianna cohen, artist and co-founder of the plastic pollution coalition. for over 20 years she has been piecing together gorgeous compositions, mostly re-using plastic bags (and other re-purposed materials) – that’s one way to keep it out of the waterways. another is by making a conscious effort to refuse plastic whenever possible. then, at the very least, we are no longer contributing to the plastic pollution cycle. here’s my own “don’t bring none, won’t be none” pledge:
i will
1. not buy or acquire any new plastic
2. refuse disposable plastic
3. not cook with plastic nor store food in plastic. remember: if your food’s in plastic, plastic’s in you…
4. minimize all other plastic use (goodbye water bottles, lighters, zip-loc baggies and big tupperware-style storage bins!)
i am trying. really trying to ween from all plastic and to refuse disposable plastics at every opportunity. 1 day at a time.
on that note, for further encouragement of the aesthetically pleasing variety:
