atwater village farm 1

so, it’s october and in la last week was hotter than hades (not that i’d know exactly). even with the triple digits, my east coast internal calendar-reflex tells me that in october i must start stocking up provisions for some serious cozy-time cooking activities. involving the stove, the oven, the crock pot, the dutch oven, the sauce pan,  and of course, the pie pan. all the cast iron pans are seasoned and ready. it’s on! slow and low roasts, stews, soups and  survey of all the delish gourds, nuts, roots you’d expect to fall out of the proverbial cornucopia. that’s where my mind and palate is although i’d have to stick my head in the freezer to find just one cool breeze. but i digress. on my way to a knitting store, to peruse wool for a weaving i’m working on, (i am totally preparing for winter hibernation, global warming be damned) i happened upon an awesome, not-too new but new to me, grocery store: atwater village farm: a ‘farm to table corner store.’ like neighborhood grocery stores of yore,  it’s the perfect, not too big/not too small scale, with the right representation of everything you could need that’s fresh, mostly local, useful, healthy (alexis smart’s flower remedies, yay!), delicious, nutritious, mouth-watering and affordable. local produce, vegan, gluten/sugar-free AND full-o-wheat/sugar stuffs, dairy and nitrate-free antibiotic-free meats -happy, under one roof. it’s the 21st century utopian grocery store. and soooo attractively presented. friendly, helpful, knowledgable, proud staff. and did i mention -affordable? this is when and where the cozy-time stockpile urge kicked in. stop in, you’ll see what i mean.

malibu. a simpler time 0

i’ve been enjoying roddy macdowell’s home movies of his casual malibu gatherings, shot over the summer of 1965.  the films are short, silent and somehow, completely captivating.  in an era when movie star candids were rare, when privacy meant private, when even tabloid mags were mostly staged photo ops, seeing so many legends, in their youth, relaxed, chatting, drinking, smoking, doing crossword, with their (never seen in tabloids) kids playing on the beach – sheds a new light on the icons we mostly knew through  -dare i say it, their work.  this is no e!/mtv “who are these people and why do we care” beach mcmansion set-up.  it’s a cavalcade of truly talented stars: actors, writers, directors, studio execs of the day with spouses, kids and pets, hanging, (as we all do, with our friends,) nothing fancy.  there’s tuesday weld, natalie wood, jane fonda, paul newman, susanne pleshette, hope lang, ruth gordon(!) to name a few but i will say, for me, the starriest of stars in any of these shorts is the regal, tall, tan and lovely lauren bacall. chic-er than chic, a timeless summer-style inspiration, captivating everyone in her midst.  you don’t need to know what she’s saying, the body language says it all…

shout out, part deux 2

recently, i had the pleasure of having an in-store, style play-date at feal mor, one of my favorite shops, run by two of my favorite people – jp and shaheen plunier. if you still haven’t been, go.  amidst the gato heroi surf boards, amsterdam wetsuits, the mini dj mixer, vintage military and all sorts of covetable objets, feal mor is known for jp’s whimsical take on traditional breton menswear  -all of which are easy enough to mix into my wardrobe. but did you know there are also many gems in the store for the ladies?

the day i saw shaheen, (madame, lady feal mor) rocking their new cap sleeved mariniere i knew i had to a) get one and 2) share the news. big time. and that’s how i happened to do some rearranging and spotlight some lady-looks featuring feal mor, delphine atelier, de rien, some vintage military shirts, sailor pants, j. augur bags and liwan sandals.

fun (and champs) was had by all. and no one was punished. ok, maybe a wallet or two may still be smarting, but, hey…

ps: the cap-sleeve marinieres are flying out the door, so you know what to do about that…

pps: attention fienders: i hear a new stash of ceramics by eric darrow and batik linens by kathryn herrman is imminent.

mama africa 0

Okayafrica is teaming up with the 19th New York African Film Festival to co-present the opening night of Mama Africa (Germany, 2011) Weds April 11th at 7:15pm at the Walter Reade Theater (or buy tickets here)

An unforgettable portrait of Miriam Makeba (1932-2008), the world-famous South African artist and civil right activist, who devoted her life to promoting peace and justice and fighting racism around the planet. A figurehead of the Black African movement in exile, her music and daily practice incarnated the hopes and fears of Africa through the convulsive 20th century, so that she has come to be considered the voice and mother of the Continent.
